Hij was hoogleraar Engelse letterkunde in Montreal, trad ook op als stichter en uitgever van Cormorant Books en ontving belangrijke literaire prijzen zoals de Lieutenant Governor`s Award for Literary Excellence, de Common Wealth Poetry Prize en de Gabriela Mistral Prijs ( - wegens verdiensten voor de literatuur en het volk van Chili`, hem uitgereikt na de val van de Pinochet-dictatuur).
